The canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden ranks 19th of the 22 cantons with largely complete parcel data by total parcel area. Of its 20 municipalities with parcel data, Herisau (4’532), Teufen (AR) (2’439) and Heiden (1’993) have the most parcels, which together hold 32.5% of the canton's parcels.

The median parcel in the canton measures 1’095 m², larger than the Swiss median of 870 m². The canton is more built-up than Switzerland as a whole: 66.9% of its parcels have a building, against 52% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Bühler has the highest share of built parcels (78.7%) and Hundwil the lowest (49.5%). Hundwil has the largest median parcel (3’721 m²) and Herisau the smallest (729 m²).
