About the canton of Geneva

The canton of Geneva ranks 11th of the 22 cantons with largely complete parcel data by number of parcels and 17th by total parcel area. Of its 45 municipalities with parcel data, Genève (10’296), Veyrier (3’377) and Vernier (3’327) have the most parcels, which together hold 23.4% of the canton's parcels.

The median parcel in the canton measures 895 m², about the same as the Swiss median of 870 m². The canton is more built-up than Switzerland as a whole: 57.6% of its parcels have a building, against 52% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Veyrier has the highest share of built parcels (78.9%) and Chancy the lowest (23.3%). Jussy has the largest median parcel (2’856 m²) and Genève the smallest (470 m²).

According to the building register, a building in the canton holds 3.2 dwellings on average, against 1.6 across Switzerland. Most residential buildings are single-family houses (62%, against 63.5% across Switzerland). Non-residential buildings account for 43.9% of all buildings.

Built parcels most often have their newest building from 1981 to 2000 (26.2% of them), and 27.4% have one from 2001 or later. The median year built, 1983, is more recent than in Switzerland as a whole (1976).
