About the canton of Vaud

The canton of Vaud ranks 4th of the 22 cantons with largely complete parcel data by number of parcels and 3rd by total parcel area. Of its 299 municipalities with parcel data, Lausanne (10’311), Ollon (9’158) and Montreux (6’759) have the most parcels, which together hold 9.2% of the canton's parcels.

The median parcel in the canton measures 1’361 m², larger than the Swiss median of 870 m². The canton is about as built-up as Switzerland as a whole: 49.3% of its parcels have a building, against 52% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Saint-Sulpice (VD) has the highest share of built parcels (82.7%) and Mutrux the lowest (8.3%). Belmont-sur-Yverdon has the largest median parcel (4’494 m²) and Vevey the smallest (844 m²).

According to the building register, a building in the canton's municipalities with parcel data holds 1.9 dwellings on average, against 1.6 across Switzerland. Most residential buildings are single-family houses (61.7%, against 63.5% across Switzerland). Non-residential buildings account for 40.3% of all buildings.

Built parcels most often have their newest building from before 1920 (20.1% of them), and 20.6% have one from 2001 or later. The median year built, 1972, is close to that of Switzerland as a whole (1976).
