About the canton of Bern

The canton of Bern has the most parcels of the 22 cantons with largely complete parcel data and ranks 2nd by total parcel area. Of its 330 municipalities with parcel data, Bern (16’975), Köniz (9’293) and Thun (8’362) have the most parcels, which together hold 7.7% of the canton's parcels in the data.

The median parcel in the canton measures 1’126 m², larger than the Swiss median of 870 m². The canton is more built-up than Switzerland as a whole: 57.8% of its parcels have a building, against 52% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Bremgarten bei Bern has the highest share of built parcels (88.1%) and Ochlenberg the lowest (24.2%). Trub has the largest median parcel (7’950 m²) and Bremgarten bei Bern the smallest (437 m²).

According to the building register, a building in the canton's municipalities with parcel data holds 1.3 dwellings on average, against 1.6 across Switzerland. Residential buildings mix single-family houses and buildings with several dwellings: single-family houses make up 57.4% of them, against 63.5% across Switzerland.
