About the canton of Thurgau

The canton of Thurgau ranks 10th of the 22 cantons with largely complete parcel data by total parcel area. Of its 80 municipalities with parcel data, Frauenfeld (6’671), Amriswil (4’709) and Kreuzlingen (4’331) have the most parcels, which together hold 11.5% of the canton's parcels.

The median parcel in the canton measures 1’142 m², larger than the Swiss median of 870 m². The canton is about as built-up as Switzerland as a whole: 53.5% of its parcels have a building, against 52% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Arbon has the highest share of built parcels (76.6%) and Schönholzerswilen the lowest (28%). Raperswilen has the largest median parcel (3’720 m²) and Wilen (TG) the smallest (625 m²).

According to the building register, a building in the canton holds 1.3 dwellings on average, against 1.6 across Switzerland. Most residential buildings are single-family houses (71.7%, against 63.5% across Switzerland). Non-residential buildings account for 40.4% of all buildings.

Built parcels most often have their newest building from 1981 to 2000 (25.2% of them), and 28.6% have one from 2001 or later. The median year built, 1986, is more recent than in Switzerland as a whole (1976).
