About the canton of St. Gallen

The canton of St. Gallen ranks 6th of the 22 cantons with largely complete parcel data by number of parcels and 4th by total parcel area. Of its 74 municipalities with parcel data, St. Gallen (11’898), Altstätten (6’326) and Oberriet (SG) (6’114) have the most parcels, which together hold 12.8% of the canton's parcels in the data.

The median parcel in the canton measures 938 m², about the same as the Swiss median of 870 m². The canton is more built-up than Switzerland as a whole: 66.6% of its parcels have a building, against 52% nationwide. Among its municipalities with at least 500 parcels, Widnau has the highest share of built parcels (82.9%) and Muolen the lowest (45.6%). Niederbüren has the largest median parcel (3’246 m²) and Rorschach the smallest (479 m²).

According to the building register, a building in the canton's municipalities with parcel data holds 1.4 dwellings on average, against 1.6 across Switzerland. Most residential buildings are single-family houses (68.2%, against 63.5% across Switzerland). Non-residential buildings account for 39.3% of all buildings.

Built parcels most often have their newest building from 1981 to 2000 (24.8% of them), and 21.4% have one from 2001 or later. The median year built, 1977, is close to that of Switzerland as a whole (1976).
